What makes this a Level 4 trip? This moderate-to-strenuous hiking trip earns its rating due to five solid Level 4 hiking days mixed with some easier hiking and touring days. You should be prepared for sustained ascents of up to 2,600 feet and trails that are often steep and rocky with uneven terrain. This trip also includes an island-hopping kayak tour with some open-water crossings lasting over an hour.
Elevation Gain and Loss: Expect an average elevation gain and loss of 1,500 feet per day, reaching peaks like Mt. Ilija at 2,564 feet of gain.
Varied Terrain: Hiking occurs on varied terrain, including rocky trails and loose scree that can be shifting and slippery, requiring consistent balance and sure-footedness.
Multi-Adventure Endurance: Participants must have the stamina for a two-hour continuous sea kayaking session, occasionally paddling against currents in choppy Adriatic waters.
We plan the itinerary carefully, but adjustments may be needed due to weather, trail conditions, or other factors. MT Sobek and our guides make thoughtful decisions when needed in real time to keep the experience safe and enjoyable, and any significant changes will be communicated as early as and as clearly as possible.
Unforeseen changes in logistics or transportation may impact specific accommodations, vehicle transfers, and the timing of activities. We ask that you arrive with a spirit of adventure and a willingness to be flexible.
Where does Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro Grand Traverse Multi-Adventure start and end?
The trip starts in Ljubljana, Slovenia, and ends in Dubrovnik, Croatia. What airport should I fly into and out of?
You should fly into Ljubljana Joze Pucnik Airport (LJU) and fly out of Dubrovnik Ruder Boskovic Airport (DBV).When should I book my flights?
Once your reservation with MT Sobek is finalized, we'll notify you of your trip's status. After your departure is confirmed to operate, flights and travel arrangements may be purchased. While we can often confirm departures in advance, some decisions may be finalized closer to final payment. Always check with your Adventure Coordinator before purchasing flights. When should I plan to arrive and depart?
Please consult with your Adventure Coordinator to confirm your departure is set to operate before booking non-refundable airfare. We strongly recommend arriving early to adjust to the time change.
Arrival: Arrive at Ljubljana Joze Pucnik Airport (LJU) no later than 2:00 pm on Day 1 to meet the scheduled group transfer.
Departure: Schedule your departing flight from Dubrovnik Ruder Boskovic Airport (DBV) any time after 2:00 pm on Day 14.
An MT Sobek representative will meet you in the Arrivals Hall at Ljubljana Joze Pucnik Airport (LJU) between 2:30 pm and 3:00 pm. You will then transfer as a group to your hotel for a 5:00 pm orientation and welcome dinner. Your Final Details, emailed about three weeks before departure, will provide the most current meet-up and guide information. What hotels do you recommend if I arrive early or stay late?
If arriving early in Ljubljana, we recommend the group hotel, Hotel Lev . For those extending their stay in Kotor, we suggest our group hotels, Hotel Vardar or Boutique Hotel Astoria Kotor . If staying in Dubrovnik post-trip, recommended options include Royal Neptun Hotel , Grand Villa Argentina , Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik , or Hotel Dubrovnik Palace . For an elevated experience in the historic heart of the city, consider The Pucic Palace .
Please book extra nights with these hotels directly. We recommend booking refundable rooms, as hotels on this itinerary are subject to change.
A valid passport is required to enter Slovenia, Croatia, and Montenegro. Most countries require that passports be valid for at least six months beyond the end of your trip and contain at least one blank page for entry stamps. US citizens do not need a visa for stays under 90 days within a 180-day period. Non-US citizens should consult their local embassy or consulate to confirm current entry requirements.Transportation and Transfers
Are airport transfers included?
Yes, one group airport transfer is included on Day 1 for arrivals by 2:00 pm and on Day 14 for departures after 2:00 pm.
On the final day, you will depart Kotor, Montenegro after breakfast and arrive at Dubrovnik Ruder Boskovic Airport (DBV) in Croatia at approximately 12 noon. While the airport's smaller size makes a 1:25 pm departure possible, we strongly recommend scheduling your flight after 2:00 pm to account for any unpredictable traffic or border delays. If you plan to extend your stay, we also provide a final stop in central Dubrovnik after the airport transfer. Transfers outside of these specific windows are not included and must be arranged on your own. Can MT Sobek help arrange a private transfer?
No, MT Sobek does not arrange private transfers for this itinerary. If you arrive early, you will need to arrange your own taxi to the hotel. They are readily available outside the airport. At the end of the trip, if your preferred flight departs early morning, we recommend that you stay an extra night in Dubrovnik and depart on Day 15 rather than arranging a private transfer early on Day 14, as border crossings between Montenegro and Croatia can be significantly delayed. How much time will we spend in vehicles during the trip?
While the trip is activity-focused, it covers approximately 500 miles, so you should expect some drives of two to three hours. Most days involve shorter transfers of 20 to 45 minutes to connect trailheads and hotels.
Are there any especially long travel days? Some days require longer journeys or multiple vehicle segments to reach destinations. Day 7 features the longest single drive of three hours, while longer transfers on other days such as Day 5, Day 8, and Day 10 are broken up by hikes or stops between destinations.Fitness, Terrain and Trail Expectations
How difficult is the activity on Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro Grand Traverse Multi-Adventure?
This is a Level 4 hiking trip involving multiple days of moderate-to-strenuous activity with elevation gains averaging 1,500 feet daily. You should be an experienced hiker comfortable with four to eight miles of hiking on uneven, slippery terrain for many days.
Elevation Change: Daily elevation gain and loss averages 1,500 feet, peaking at 2,564 feet on the summit of Mt. Ilija.
Varied Terrain: Expect trails with loose rocky scree and steep, uneven sections that require strong balance and sure-footedness.
Steady Paddling: Sea kayaking requires the stamina to paddle continuously for up to two hours, sometimes against currents in choppy conditions. Good cardiovascular fitness and some core strength are recommended to fully enjoy this activity.
Yes, recent and solid hiking experience is essential due to the steep ascents and rocky terrain. While no prior kayaking experience is required, you should feel comfortable paddling for up to two hours. How should I train or prepare for Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro Grand Traverse Multi-Adventure?
We recommend giving yourself at least six months to build a solid cardiovascular base before your trip. Focus on your cardio endurance and strength to handle the sustained ascents and descents and rocky trails of the Julian Alps and coastal ranges.
Cardio and Strength: Plan to hit the gym or go for a run three to five times a week Start out gradually and increase your aerobic training to four to five times each week, 40 to 60 minutes at a time. Your heart will thank you on those uphills! If you don't have hilly terrain nearby, you can train on stairs, a treadmill or stair machine. A training guide will also be included in your MT Sobek guest portal after booking.
Hiking: Get out on a hike at least one day per week. Hikes should gradually increase in duration every three to four weeks, with hikes ranging from three to six hours. Your training hikes should incorporate ascents and descents of 600-2,000 feet. In the absence of hills, work out on a stair machine at the gym, or use the stairs at a nearby building.
Pack Training: Hike with the daypack you plan to bring, starting with 10 pounds and adding weight in small increments as you get closer to departure.
There is some trail exposure on Days 3, 11, and 13, with some viewpoints in areas with steep drop-offs, where you can maintain your distance from the edge. The itinerary includes crossing swinging bridges between 50 and 75 feet in length over the Soca River on Days 4 and 5. Crossing over the pass on Day 4, you'll travel on narrow and winding mountain roads with steep drop-offs. Terrain is often characterized by loose limestone scree and steep, uneven trails. Your guides manage these sections carefully, but sure-footedness is required. Can I hike at my own pace?
The group hikes together with regular breaks. Guides help manage pacing so everyone can hike comfortably while maintaining safety and group cohesion. What if I want to skip a day?
If you need to rest and would like to skip a day on this trip, you can opt out of activities on most days and relax at the hotel. Talk to your guide about what options are available, and note that alternative activities cannot always be arranged. You can also choose to skip the kayaking tour and explore a local park. How much free time will I have?
This is a well-balanced trip that mixes activity with culture; afternoons often include wine tasting, visiting UNESCO sites, or relaxing at hotels with wellness spas. Evenings are generally relaxed, and Day 9 features dinner on your own to explore at your leisure. What is the kayaking like?
We use stable, two-person, sit-on-top kayaks with a very low risk of tipping, and they include storage barrels to hold your daytime essentials. The activity does require stamina and good cardiovascular fitness, as you should be prepared to paddle continuously for up to two hours, occasionally against a current, and conditions may be choppy at times. To stay comfortable, we recommend wearing a bathing suit, board shorts or moisture-wicking capris, and a rash guard. A sun hat with a chin strap is also highly recommended to keep you protected while you enjoy the sea air.Accommodations and Meals
What should I expect from accommodations on this trip?
You will stay in comfortable 4-star hotels and boutique inns chosen for their location and amenities, such as wellness spas. One remote family-run inn mid-trip provides basic but clean and comfortable guest rooms. Accommodations range from modern sleek buildings to a renovated 15th-century palace. Keep in mind that while hotels may have a safe in your room, it is often not big enough to store a laptop or tablet. Will I have access to Wi-Fi and electricity?
Yes, Wi-Fi is available at all of your hotels, and electric outlets are present in every accommodation for nightly charging. What meals are included?
All meals are included, with the exception of dinner on Day 9, giving you the opportunity to explore Croatian cuisine on your own. Snacks and water are provided between meals. What is the food like on Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro Grand Traverse Multi-Adventure?
Balkan cuisine is abundant and diverse, and is influenced by local natural resources, tradition, and neighboring countries Austria, Italy, Croatia, and Hungary. Despite a popular myth that Eastern European cuisine is basic, Slovenia, Croatia, and Montenegro enjoy a rich and varied selection of produce (such as wild berries, potatoes, leeks, lettuces, beans, tomatoes, olives, and grapes), sea and freshwater fish, and meats like pork, beef, duck and chicken. Mushrooms as well as locally grown marjoram, sage, and other herbs are also abundant, and dishes often include local wildflowers such as dandelion. There is a strong tradition of farm-to-table dining here.
Breakfasts: Served buffet-style at the hotels, you will have a range of cold cuts, cheese, eggs, fruit, yogurt, cereals, and pastries to choose from along with juice, coffee, and tea.
Lunches: Several picnic lunches are enjoyed at picturesque sites along your hike. This will usually include sandwich fixings, fruit, cookies, veggies, salads, cheese, and other snacks. Other times, lunches are enjoyed at local restaurants, cafes, or wineries in scenic locations.

What should I pack for Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro Grand Traverse Multi-Adventure?
Focus on dressing in synthetic or wool layers to handle shifts from mountain winds to coastal sun. Essential items include a waterproof rain jacket and pants, a swimsuit for kayaking, and sun protection including a wide-brimmed hat. A full packing list will be provided.Do I need trekking poles or specialty gear?
Trekking poles are highly recommended for this trip. They provide essential support on steep trails and rocky terrain. We also suggest packing a rash guard and board shorts—or any moisture-wicking shorts or capris—to protect you from the sun and keep you dry while paddling. What size daypack should I bring?
A daypack with a 25- to 35-liter capacity is ideal. It should be large enough to carry your water, snacks, rain gear, fleece, sunscreen, and personal items while on the trail. Can I bring more than one bag?
Guests should plan to bring one main piece of luggage and a daypack. Because vehicle space is limited, packing efficiently is important. On this itinerary, luggage transfer is included, meaning your bags are moved from hotel to hotel while you hike—so you can focus on the trail, not your gear. Are there any seasonally required items?
Regardless of the season, you must be prepared for mountain weather that can drop into the 30sF quickly. Bring moisture-wicking shirts and shorts for warm coastal days, and a rash guard for kayaking. Warm gloves and a hat are essential for cold mornings or windy conditions.
What kind of footwear should I bring for this trip? You will need sturdy, medium-weight, waterproof hiking boots with solid soles and ankle support for rocky terrain. Trainers are fine for some lighter days, and water sandals are optional for kayaking. Ensure all boots are completely broken in before travel. Will I have access to laundry during the trip?
Yes, laundry service is available for a fee on Day 9 at the Hotel Puteus Palace. Items must be left at reception by 9:00 am. We also recommend bringing a travel clothesline and detergent for hand-washing small items.Should I bring a personal medical kit?
Yes. Your guide will also carry a first aid kit, but we recommend you bring your own supply of basics such as blister care, pain reliever, bandages, sunscreen, lip protection, and electrolytes to have handy. Consider bringing motion sickness preventatives for time on the water and on mountain roads. Please bring a sufficient supply of your personal medications. Some items easily purchased at home may not be available at local pharmacies, and there may not be a pharmacy in some of the smaller towns or remote locations on this itinerary.On-the-Ground Travel Tips
What is the weather like on Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro Grand Traverse Multi-Adventure by month?
The weather varies significantly between high alpine elevations and the Mediterranean coast. While summer temperatures can reach the 80s° F, mountain conditions can drop into the 30s or 40s° F rapidly during wind or rain.
May to July: This period features mild mountain weather and sunny coastal days, with the Julian Alps alive with wildflowers.
September and October: Expect warm coastal days and cooler mountain air, with a higher chance of rain as you move into the autumn season.
Elevation Variability: Temperatures typically range between the 50s and 70s° F during the day, but wind can lower these significantly at altitude and as you head inland away from the coast.
The currency for all three countries is the euro (EUR). We recommend exchanging cash or using an ATM upon arrival in Ljubljana and keeping receipts to exchange back at the end of the trip. Credit cards are widely accepted, but cash is necessary for small personal expenses and tipping. Will I have cell service?
Cell service is generally available in towns, but coverage can be inconsistent while hiking in remote national parks. Check with your provider regarding international rates before departure. Will I need electrical adapters or a voltage converter?
All three countries use the 230V system. Slovenia and Montenegro use Type F adapters, while Croatia uses both Type C and Type F. A useful resource to see images of plug types is www.power-plugs-sockets.com . Check the voltage on your personal electronics chargers to determine if you need a voltage converter. You will have access to electrical outlets at every accommodation to charge your devices nightly.
How much extra money should I budget?Your trip cost includes most major expenses. We recommend budgeting for personal expenses such as meals on your own (dinner is on your own on Day 9), souvenirs, laundry, and optional tips to your guides. How is tipping handled on this trip?
Tipping is a common practice to show appreciation for your guides' expertise. We recommend tipping each MT Sobek guide the equivalent of $140 to $210 USD in Euros per participant. Please bring local currency, as our teams cannot accept tips via payment apps or credit cards. Tipping for hotel and restaurant staff is already included in your price.Health and Safety
Do you recommend travel insurance?
Yes, we strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance for all trips. Travel insurance can help cover trip cancellations or interruptions, medical expenses, emergency evacuation, travel delays, and other unexpected situations. We offer travel insurance with Arch RoamRight and will be happy to provide you with a quote. Please see our Travel Resources page for more information.
Do I need to be cleared by a doctor to participate? There is no standard required clearance from a doctor to participate in this trip. You will have an opportunity to discuss your fitness and preparedness for the trip with MT Sobek. If you have medical concerns or questions about fitness, consult your healthcare provider before traveling. What medical support is available during the trip?
Your guides are responsible for the safety of the group and carry first aid kits. Hospital facilities are typically accessible within a short drive of the hikes but can take longer in certain more remote parts of the trip. We recommend that you bring prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, test kits, and other pharmacy products that you might need with you. Some items easily purchased at home may not be available at local pharmacies; and there may not be a pharmacy in some of the smaller towns or remote locations visited. What kind of challenges should I expect on Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro Grand Traverse Multi-Adventure?
Expect physical challenges like steep limestone ascents, loose scree, and trail exposure. Additionally, be aware that smoking is common and allowed indoors in many public areas throughout the Balkans, which may affect those who are sensitive to smoke. Also expect driving on mountain roads to involve some exposure to heights and consider bringing motion sickness preventatives for use on the water and on winding roads. How can I stay healthy during the trip?
Check with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for information on recommended immunizations, and/or your local travel clinic or healthcare provider for health concerns at your destination.
Stay healthy by washing your hands frequently, addressing hot spots and blisters early, and keeping your toenails clipped. Hydration is key, especially on warm days or during continuous paddling. On warmer days, using powdered electrolytes can help replenish minerals lost through sweat. Trail Support and Emergencies
What if I have an emergency and need to be evacuated?
Guides will assess the situation and coordinate evacuation based on location and vehicle access. Evacuation can be prolonged and expensive, so we strongly recommend insurance with medical evacuation coverage. Are bathrooms available on the trail?
There are bathroom facilities available at some huts, but not generally on the trail. We follow "leave no trace" principles; guides will provide instruction on how to handle nature's call responsibly while outdoors.
What is the guide-to-guest ratio? This trip is supported by one MT Sobek guide for every eight guests. These guides also serve as drivers for the support vehicles.Extensions and Local Exploration
Are trip extensions available before or after Slovenia, Croatia and Montenegro Grand Traverse Multi-Adventure?
Trip extensions are not available for this itinerary. If you're planning to arrive early or stay late independently, see the recommendations below. What are the best things to do if I arrive early or stay late?
If you arrive early in Ljubljana, take time to explore the picturesque squares of the medieval old town or walk through Tivoli Park. In Kotor, climbing the fortified walls provides breathtaking views of the bay, while wandering the narrow lanes of the old town reveals its rich commercial history. This trip also includes an island-hopping kayak tour with some open-water crossings lasting over an hour.

Please bring local currency, as our teams cannot accept tips via payment apps or credit cards. Tipping for hotel and restaurant staff is already included in your price.Health and Safety

We offer travel insurance with Arch RoamRight and will be happy to provide you with a quote. Please see our Travel Resources page for more information.
Do I need to be cleared by a doctor to participate? There is no standard required clearance from a doctor to participate in this trip.
